Industrial Applications

To build reliable information networks and deliver services to remote locations, organizations must solve the challenges of powering equipment that can detect the world around it, broadcast strong signals, or execute complicated industrial processes without direct supervision.

Ferntech's monitoring and control capabilities make it possible to manage the performance of simple and complex power systems. Operators have visibility into system performance and the tools to make adjustments to behavior as necessary.

Project selected as one of the best water projects in all Latin America in 2019
Use Case: Water Access

663 million people worldwide still use unimproved drinking water sources, including unprotected wells and springs, and surface water. The majority of this population lives in the two developing regions in countries of sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asian.

Unimproved or contaminated water can transmit diseases and, in many cases, is the reason of thousands of deaths mostly of children younger than five years old.

Off-grid zero emission electricity generation systems represent an innovative solution in rural and isolated regions.

With the progression of desertification, a growing demand for off-grid water treatment plants is expected during the next decades.

The Project:

With the support of DEG, Ferntech and Membran-Filtrations-Technik (mft) have developed a renewable energy powered, remotely controllable micro-reverse osmosis water desalination plant: The RO-SEA 100.

The drinking water produced is sold locally to municipalities or end user, which so far have limited or no access to clean drinking water.

Ferntech provided embedded hardware to monitor the reverse osmosis systems and the off-grid systems as a whole, taking responsibility for context data transfer, the web portal and the long-term data analysis.

The plant is supplied with wind and solar energy, which is stored in lithium-ion batteries. Weather conditions, state-of-charge of the battery etc are monitored and recorded using the Ferntech Controller.

The data is sent via GSM to the Ferntech server so that actionable decisions can be taken in real time by mft back in Cologne.

Controller logic has also been built into the Ferntech device, enabling the unit to switch itself on/off as necessary when certain monitored conditions are exceeded (e.g., state of charge).

Use Case: Commercial installations

Remote buildings like mountain huts, ski resorts, and weather stations require careful power management.

Ferntech’s controller is up and running in ten Austrian huts already thanks to a collaboration with an Austrian off-grid system operator.
These huts rely exclusively on their own energy (i.e. solar, wind).
Ferntech has made the operation of these systems much easier, maximising their performance.

Use Case: Mining
Established mining operations require reliable power in isolated locations to maintain operations and power safety infrastructure. Depending on a mines' operating schedule, system operators may need to cycle battery discharge and recharge, or run different sets of equipment.

Ferntech's remote monitoring and control solution allows centrally-located technical staff to manage power availability at every one of their sites. In addition to extending power system lifespan, this lowers operation and maintenance costs by limiting the need for on-site crew visits.

Use Case: Fish Farm
Commercial fisheries are uniquely challenging locations for power infrastructure because of the inherent proximity of electronics and water. Monitoring of component health and the availability of redundant power supplies is a necessary to maintaining equipment in these difficult environments.

Ferntech allows operators to better plan maintenance with real-time data on component behavior. This enables on-site staff to intervene before components fail entirely, helping keep a location operating at peak efficiency.
